About me
My name is Nicole Thompson, and I am a semi-finalist for the 2018 National Spanish Exam Teacher Study Abroad Scholarship in Costa Rica.
I am a passionate, energetic and dedicated Spanish teacher born and raised in the Milwaukee area. I currently teach at New Berlin West Middle and High School in New Berlin, Wisconsin, about 30 minutes west of Milwaukee.
About Me
I was born and raised in New Berlin, Wisconsin. I graduated from Eisenhower High School in 2007 and attended Marquette University. At Marquette, I began as a Journalism major but was fortunate enough to have a transformative Service Learning experience at a bilingual school in MPS in 2008. I graduated in December 2011 with Bachelor of Science Degree Magna Cum Laude in EA-A Education and Spanish and a minor in Sociology.
During my semester of student teaching I worked at Riverside High School in Milwaukee with two cooperating teachers. I was responsible for three periods of Spanish 2 and one period of Bilingual World Studies, a freshman-level course for Native Spanish Speakers enrolled in the Bilingual Program. During my internship, I was responsible for the complete planning and execution of lessons in all curricular areas, communication with parents and staff, monitoring social and behavioral development, running parent/teacher conferences, and attending all staff and department meetings.
Teaching Experience
Upon graduation and the successful completion of my student teaching, I began working as a long-term Spanish substitute teacher in a number of districts surrounding Milwaukee, including Muskego, St. Francis, West Bend, New Berlin, and Sussex Hamilton. Each position lasted around two-three months, and I was responsible for all curricular planning, assessment, collaboration, differentiation, and implementation of technology including the SmartBoard and class sets of iPods. I successfully integrated into each World Language Department and also connected with students, building rapport quickly and successfully managing the classroom. I have been teaching at New Berlin West since 2014.
Salta, Argentina
In January 2013 I set off for Salta, Argentina, thanks to a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship from District 6270. While in Argentina I was pursuing a Master's Degree in Language Sciences at la Universidad Nacional de Salta, the public, national university in Salta. I have completed all my coursework and have to write my master's thesis in order to finish the program. I also taught English through the Cambridge assessments CAE and CPE at an International Baccalaureate (IB) High School, Colegio Santa María, as well as volunteered at Instituto Franklin, a private English institute. I absolutely love Argentina but returned to the USA in December of 2013.
